The Story of My Quilts

A trunk show of the quilts I have made and how my quilts and teaching career have progressed over the years.

When traveling by air this will be a combined slide show and trunk show.

Quilts and Needlework from the 1930's

We will explore the fabrics, quilting patterns, designers, techniques and trends from this wonderful time period. Many examples from my extensive collection will be shown to illustrate the fabrics and patterns used.

Ode to William Morris

In this lecture we will do a retrospective look at William Morris, the founder of the Arts and Craft Movement. Morris's work, designs, and emphasis on the value of hand craftsmanship have had a profound influence on designers throughout the world.

We will look at quilts made from his reproduction fabrics as well as quilts I have designed using his beautiful, timeless textiles as my inspiration source in my Floral Abundance book.

Sacred Threads

Quilts can inspire as well as have a tremendous healing power in times of trouble and tragedy. We will examine the stories and learnings in some of these special quilts. Examples will be shown from my Biblical Blocks and More Biblical Quilt Blocks books.

Wedding and Anniversary Quilts

Since women first began quilting they have been making special quilts for wedding and anniversary celebrations. We will study some of these special quilts and learn about typical patterns used, background information on wedding and anniversary customs, traditions, and symbolism—some dating as far back as the Ancient Greeks. Quilts will be shown from my present series of quilts on this theme.

Victorian Appliqué Revival

Since the 1980's we have seen a resurgence of Victorian influence in many areas, such as clothing styles, interior decorating, faux painting techniques, and needlework skills, as well as quilting techniques and patterns.

The exquisite album quilts made in Baltimore, Maryland, between 1846 and 1854 are known the world over for their complex appliqué patterns, intricate needlework techniques, sophisticated use of fabrics, and beautiful inked inscriptions.

In this lecture, we will look in particular at how these quilts have affected the quilting world today. We will learn about the history, the distinguishing characteristics, and the symbolism of these quilts.

Slides will be included from the Baltimore Revisited Show at Quilters' Heritage Celebration in Lancaster, Pennsylvania as well as quilts made by students in my Victorian Appliqué classes and workshops.

Flaunting Your Quilts

What do you do with your quilts after all your beds are covered? Many beautiful and creative ways to use and enjoy quilts in your home will be shown in this slide lecture. A mini trunk show of some of my work will be included.

A Kodak carousel slide projector and a screen are needed for all the lectures except for The Story of My Quilts which is a trunk show. It also will be partly slides when travelling by air. At least two tall people will be needed for holding up the quilts. Several tables or areas for display purposes are needed for all the lectures. A microphone and sound system are also needed.
